Review: Winter’s here. That means no more farmer’s markets or leisurely strolls through the city, picking up items I need from the stores I happen to pass. It means, quite simply, sprinting from home to bus to work to bus to store and to home again. We Midwesterners not only dress in layers to stay warm, but also exercise by bitching, moaning and, yes, reducing our time out of our caves.

While I prefer to buy produce a piece at a time as I need it, my thin skin instills me with a need to buy in minor bulk. Trader Joe’s only offers most produce in small bulk lots of five or six. You’d be hard pressed to find a single onion or tomato anywhere in the store. Their small to medium bulk sizes may be annoying in the warmer months when fresh produce tends to go bad faster, but in the winter, these small bags are the perfect size to last you a week or so, before you work up the will power to brave the cold and go grocery shopping again.

Top Line tomatoes may not live up to their name, but they do taste fresh and retain their crisp firmness longer than the average supermarket tomato. The bulk price for five well-sized tomatoes is less than I’ve seen as well. I eagerly await the return of the farmers markets and warm weather, but for now, Joe’s mini bulk will see me through the cold months with ingredients for my mad creations… Muhahaha!… err… dishes…
