Pocket Change: 10/01/08

  • If you only read one thing today, please just read the first line of this article from Bloomberg.com. Remember… this is Bloomberg! (Bloomberg)
  • Everyone knows that over half of the internet is dedicated to looking at boobs. Finally, a group of people have exploited this fact for a great cause. At Boobiethon.com, you can see pictures of users’ scantily clad breasts. If you’d like to see them clad-less, you can make a donation to see the uncovered chests. All donations go toward breast cancer research. Brilliant! (Boobiethon.com via )
  • Play Budget Hero, a new flash game where you are in charge of the national budget. See how long you can delay the downfall of our country’s economy! (Marketplace)
  • My city’s best newspaper just gave themselves a re-design. It now looks like a graphic design student’s extra credit project and offers even less real news! Sadly, it is still Chicago’s best newspaper. (Chicagoist)
  • In other sad newspaper news, when I checked the Chicago Tribune’s website, the lead story was about Ty Warner (of beanie baby fame) purchasing a ridiculously expensive penthouse in the Chicago Spire. Now that’s what I call important front page news! (I’m all for fluff and culture news. I just think it should be where it belongs) (Chicago Tribune)
  • More reason from Douglas Rushkoff regarding the economic crisis. (Boing Boing)
  • Chicago’s finally getting an indoor food/farmer’s market! Unfortunately, it will only be open for a couple of months. If Chicago is going to tout itself as a “Global City,” can’t we get a decent year-round indoor market like almost every other big city in the states? (MenuPages)
  • Does anyone else think that former host of Lifestyles of The Rich and Famous celebrity spokesperson for American Family Publishers, Ed McMahon’s foreclosure and unpaid $100,000 loan says more about the general consensus regarding how to get what you want in life than we’d like to admit? (Huffington Post)
  • With all of the economic ups and downs, it turns out that wine collectors are sitting pretty. Still, the wine market is experiencing a bit of political influence. Palin Syrah, from Chile, is experiencing a surge in sales due to McCain’s VP nominee… Because of her last name, not the whine that Katie Couric emits when she is told that she has to interview Sarah again. (HuffPo)
  • McCain and Obama are both calling for an increase in deposit insurance to $250,000. Whew! Now I don’t have to get another mattress… I mean, why would I? The one I have now is hollow and full of supportive springs. (New York Times)
  • Ecuador has voted to grant rights to nature. Pshaw… here in America, one of the byproducts of nature is more important than human beings or their rights! (NYT)
  • Anyone who thinks that borrowing money from China to bail out our economic markets is a good idea needs to read this. (Daily Mail)
  • An interview with author, Margaret Atwood, regarding her new book about the history of debt. (Times Online)
  • The credit crisis isn’t real? (Credit Slips)
  • The “Free Market” has been partially controlled by the government for a long long time. No need to scream “Pinko!” and go running for the mountains. (Washington Post)
