Review: Usually, when someone makes a purchase like this, they aren’t too eager to see how effective the product is. It is a purchase of faith. Faith in the Chinese manufacturing industry. Faith in the standards and practices of an incredibly large bicycle corporation headquartered in my home state of Wisconsin. Faith in foam and plastics.

Luckily (and I do mean luckily) for me, I was able to find out the effectiveness of this protective accessory mere hours after I bought it. I didn’t take a spill off of my bike (that’s where the “luckily” comes in). No, you see, after a morning of biking on the weekend annoyance that is the Chicago lake front bicycle trail, I found myself both psychologically and physically upset. The psychology came from the ignorance of tourists standing in the middle of a bike path, snapping pictures of each other making rabbit ears in the air. The physical frustration came from the biological need to urinate.

It was in my haste to relieve my bowels that I ran up the stairs to my apartment, burst through my front door, made a bee-line for the bathroom and came to a sudden and somewhat violent stop in the entrance.

Yes, I still had my brand new helmet on my head. Yes, the door frame to my bathroom is a bit short. Yes, I cracked my head into said door frame. No, I was not injured or hurt. Yes, the helmet worked… and no, I didn’t wet myself despite the minor setback to my goal.

The helmet, itself, meets my requirements for a protective accessory. First, it sits comfortably on my big head and is easily adjustable by virtue of the click wheel in the back. Second, the helmet is well ventilated by virtue of the holes all over it. As you can see from the picture, one of the virtues that this helmet does not exemplify (at least on my head) is style. Of course, if you are looking for style when buying a helmet, you probably have your virtues all mixed up.

There are cheaper helmets out there, but I didn’t want to put off my safety for too much longer. And $40 isn’t too much to pay to protect myself… whether it’s from the unthinkable or the door frame to my bathroom.

Now, I’m no doctor, but I’m pretty sure urine doesn’t come from the bowels…

I’m glad you got a helmet.
