Review: I realized, while waiting in line at Caribou Coffee today, that I had simply been reviewing each cup of coffee I drink by the establishment where it is purchased. Well, that’s just not fair to you people. What a cheap cop-out I’ve been pulling each and every day. As most coffee shops are wont to do, Caribou brews a different blend of coffee each day for me. (well, not just for me…although with the frequency I buy coffee from them, they should…hear that Brendan? Alex? For me!)

Some days, the coffee from Caribou is bitter, some days smooth and satisfying. Some days it’s just like battery acid to the spider at the end of Stephen King’s IT, but do I stop drinking it? Of course not, because I’m addicted. However, in further attempts to analyze my consumer habits and addictions, I have decided to be a bit more specific with my coffee reviews and make them blend-appropriate. This way, I can better understand which days I should just stick with the green tea and I can also prove to you readers how sensitive and wise of a palette I have… or lack.

The description on the bag of this particular coffee blend says that there is a mixture of chocolate and black cherry flavor contained in this brew. Well, I don’t see where they get a fruit flavor out of this. I can understand the chocolate flavor, but most coffee tastes at least a little bit like the bitterness of dark chocolate. Oh to be an ad-copy writer. Sit me in a room for $60k a year and I’ll spin yarns about how whiskey tastes like flowers and my armpit smells like aerosol air freshener. None of it will be true, but it will sound damn good. I promise. My resume is available upon request.

It will also sound good.

Despite my complaints over the advertising of this particular blend of coffee, I rather like the flavor…which is the important part. Caribou’s Costa Rica coffee is a light roasted bean with a smooth flavor and very little acidity. Unlike other work days when I don’t finish my cup of coffee, this cup was gone in under thirty minutes.

Which reminds me, I think I will walk down the block and get my free refill.

Note (02/09/06): Yesterday, I was comparing a co-worker’s small Caribou Coffee cup to my medium Caribou Coffee cup and realized that there really isn’t much difference in size, so I’ve decided to switch to the $0.10 cheaper cup every day. If I were a stingy bastard, this would amount to hundreds of dollars worth of savings every year, but I always throw my change into the Caribou staff’s tip cups. I’m not saving anything, but I am cutting down on my caffeine intake slightly and increasing my financial appreciation of the barrista’s hard work.
