Review: What is it about vegan food? Most of the vegan bakery I have tried has been chalky and bland, with little or no sweet flavor. Well, I think I just found out where all of the sugar went.

This split pea soup is unusually sweet. Now, I know that peas can sometime have a sweet flavor to them, but you could call this stuff Skittles soup and have me fooled. I can deal with the fact that a vegan soup isn’t going to have the little pieces of ham that I have come to expect in American style split pea soup, but at least put a bit of salt in this stuff. You got the consistency and color down right… now let’s try working on the flavor, eh?

Of course, after adding a couple five handfulls of salt to my simmering green broth, the natural flavor became the sodium-packed one that I am tragically used to. *shrug*. Maybe I am just so used to the traditional American way of cooking demon vomit, that all of the natural flavors in pea soup have been unknown to me. Maybe the fact that this was a canned soup corrupted my experience. Either way, I doubt I’ll be buying this split pea soup again.

I found that soup to be very disappointing as well. Boo to that soup. Booooooo.

For the opposite reason stated by the Chicago reviewer I also hate the new split pea soup by Trader Joe. I used the old style salt free. Much better flavor and I get to control the salt levels. I hope TJ management reads these reviews.
