Review: No Chicago pizza snob would be found dead in Bacci. Tourists and New Yorkers, however, would probably love this place and its pizza in all of its flat, thin-crust glory. Not to mention, the slices they sell are nearly the size of a whole frozen pizza. On weekend nights, Bacci is the refuge of barflies and staggering hipsters trudging home from concerts at the Empty Bottle. Though barely hip, I was one of the latter early this morning.
Bacci’s pizza dough is bland, the pepperoni isn’t peppery and the cheese is heat-lamp gold. I’m a fan of more traditional Chicago-style pizza, but under the circumstances, both the hunger pangs in my stomach and I appreciated the value and drunken chorus that Bacci had to offer. I don’t know of any other place you can fill up on adequate street-style pizza and a free fountain drink (with free refills) for $4.00.
Bacci’s window bar seating area is spare and clean while cast iron furniture hugs the outer wall for optimal late night street theater seating. Though I wouldn’t go out of my way to visit Bacci, it’s nice to know that places like this still survive. There’s something very urban and appropriate about Bacci.
