Review: Buttermilk tastes sour. Buttermilk smells sour. Can anyone tell me how to tell when buttermilk goes bad?

Can anyone also tell me why my grocery doesn’t offer a smaller carton of buttermilk?

I bought this milk to make a loaf of bread, but only needed a fraction of what was in the carton. By the time I remembered it was in my refrigerator, I didn’t want to risk using it in anything… especially not my digestive tract. It served it’s purpose and added a creamy taste to the loaf of bread I made, but I doubt I’ll indulge with this purchase any time in the near future. It just feels like a monumental waste of cow juice.

I was wondering this myself just this morning–the scary thing is that I can’t remember when I made that cornbread that called for buttermilk. Fortunately, the Safeway here offers this in pints. Still more than I needed for cornbread, but a lot less to pour down the sink (would the cats like it?) than the quart.
