Review: Compared to the previously reviewed item, this was a much better cupcake at a much better price. I try to steer clear of most cupcakes with huge frosting crowns because they are usually too sweet for my taste. More’s salted caramel cupcake strikes a balance I might even go back for.
The cake is pure caramel flavor on the tongue. Moist and crumbly, it was a pleasure to place in my mouth. Though the caramel center I have heard so much about didn’t ooze as I was led to believe, it did add a concentrated sugar caramel rush to the overall flavor. The mastery of this little dessert, however, comes with the frosting. Instead of an ultra sweet punch of sugar and cream, this frosting serves to temper the sweetness of the cake below and tie the granules of black salt on top to the rest of the experience. With only the slightest hint of sugar, the frosting is reminiscent of the way milk or cream enhances a cup of black coffee, bringing out the richness and flavor.
When you are lucky enough to get a bite with all three elements (salt, cream, cake) this cupcake works. Unfortunately the salt is precisely and sparingly placed in the center of the frosting, serving more as a decoration than a contribution to the overall flavor. Each element is rendered to delicious perfection, though I wish more thought was put into the composition in regards to taste rather than visual aesthetic.
