Review: There are two types of people in this world. There is the type of person who put forth the extra effort to eat at places like Eppy’s and there is the type of person who has no sense of humor. There is the type of person who happily eats any cream cheese the refrigerator section has to offer at the grocery store and there is the type of person who takes pride in seeking out restaurateurs who take pride in their home made smear.

Okay, that’s four types of people, but they overlap a bit. Guess which of those I am!

Larry Epstein takes so much pride in his product that he called on an employee to taste the veggie cream cheese before serving it to me. Before you start accusing the character of a man of trying to poison his employees, I should tell you that Larry explained to me that he doesn’t like veggie cream cheese and felt that he wouldn’t be able to get an accurate reading on its taste since he rarely eats it. Larry then proceeded to tell me about several of the incarnations of his cream cheeses, which mostly depend on how much cream his various employees use (I like the employee who makes it ultra thick. Some of them make it a bit too runny.

Despite the inconsistencies of the cream cheese, Eppy’s is now becoming my pre-work stop for a bagel and smear. That New York staple that acts as a bridge from consciousness to lunch. My only major complaint is that the bagels are nowhere near large enough to be considered a NY staple. Still, I’ll be going back for this delicately toasted bagel that comes loaded with lovingly made and deliciously fresh cream cheese many many times.
