Review: Growing up in the suburbs of Wisconsin, I had a very skewed view of what roast beef sandwich. Going to the local Arby’s franchise (owned by legendary major league baseball player, Hank Aaron, no less) on the weekends, I thought all roast beef was well-done sliced thin meat resembling grocery store cold cuts. The meat’s texture was smooth and sleek and the taste depended solely on how much Arby’s sauce you loaded onto your sandwich (I still love Arby’s sauce).
Eppy’s has once again opened my eyes. First, they were opened to what a real reuben should be and now they have been opened to what a real roast beast should be.
First of all, none of this well done stuff. We need a little pink in there. The medium rare meat used at Eppy’s told me this. Secondly, don’t smooth out the natural texture of beef to make it palatable to people who think pre-packaged, pre-sliced and pre-flattened lunch meat is the be all end all. Eppy’s told me this as well, by keeping the all natural texture of what a beef muscle should be. I may not like the idea of cutting up an animal, draining it of it’s blood, tenderizing it’s flesh and roasting it over medium high heat, but if I’m going to eat it, the texture should be there at the very least as a sign of respect.
Eppy’s roast beef sandwich is a perfectly prepared pleasure for the right price. Get it on your choice of bread with your choice of toppings (pay a little extra for cheese). Do I even have to mention the two sides, pickle spear and fountain drink (with free refills) that comes with it? For this price? Is Larry Epstein nuts? Probably. But in a very good and tasty way.
