Review: I’ve walked by bin Wine Cafe many times and always paid it no attention. It always struck me as a place that people would go to to pay too much for wine and be seen. That kind of attitude just means that I can sometimes be as shallow as those people who go someplace to pay too much for wine and be seen. This morning while my girlfriend and I wandered up and down Milwaukee Ave in breakfast indecision, we decided to stop and look at the menu.

bin’s weekend brunch menu is small, but alluring. Bloody Marys and mimosas are highlighted, but tucked on the left side is an alluring list of moderately priced breakfast dishes. Initially I wanted an egg sandwich, but that would have set me back a few bucks more and come with cheese and sides that my recently upset stomach didn’t want to deal with, so I decided to make a meal out of two sides. The bagel (w/cream cheese) is listed on the menu alongside other yeasty options for $2.00, while my receipt revealed that the other options were two dollars. There was a separate $1.00 charge for the bagel. It was still worth it, but this was a bit misleading.

The bagel itself was of the onion variety, quite large and toasted perfectly. The cream cheese was nothing to write home about, but filling while my egg was made just the way I remember my father preparing them when I was a child. I used one quarter of the bagel to sop up the runny yolk, another quarter to create an open-face sandwich with the yellowed egg whites and the remaining half as a transportation device for the cream cheese.

Our waitress and the other staff were very attentive to refills and cleaning off the small tables and the food my girlfriend and I ordered was filling and delicious. Maybe I’ll think twice next time a wave of pre-breakfast snobbery hits me. Next time I won’t hesitate to walk into bin when the need for a quick weekend brunch hits me.
