Review: I thought I’d try a different approach to my weekly batch of tomato marinara/sauce that I keep on hand for my cooking needs. Instead of going the purely canned route that I usually take, I thought I’d mix it up with a bit of canned and a bit of fresh. In my mind, puree + fresh tomatoes would = a superior sauce than the one I usually make.

Boy, was I wrong!

I’ve purchased Dell’ Alpe products in the past, and have never before been disappointed by them. This, however was a bit of a mistake, maybe more on my part than Dell’ Alpe’s. The problem with this puree is that it only captures the tomatoes’ sweetness and none of their natural acidity. It tasted as if sugar was actually added to the mixture before blending. Even after simmering the sauce with the fresh tomatoes and aromats, it still tasted as if it would be better as a tomato candy product. The only possible thing I can use this sauce for is to top a heavily cheesed and savoried pizza.

This would work great as a substitute for tomato paste, but in the future, when I want to go fresh with my sauces, I’m going to go all the way.
