Review: There is a tradition here in America which happens every Super Bowl Sunday. No, I’m not talking about watching muscular guys in skin tight pants jump on each other while chasing a ball. I’m also not talking about slowly becoming more and more disappointed with the lack of wit in the premium priced commercials between the average 15 minutes of on-air in-play game that we see in an average three hour broadcast. I’m not even talking about drinking watered down Midwestern beer until we pee our beds.
No, what I speak of is the tradition of eating cheap canned hors d’Å“uvres until your pants buttons detach themselves and break the sound barrier. So, that’s exactly what we did with various dips and chips and chili.
In the case of canned Chili, it is widely accepted knowledge that the quality of the muddy sludge is directly proportional to how close your own gas brings you to vomiting the next morning. Eating Right’s vegetarian chili fails (or succeeds?) this test on so many levels.
First of all, the contents of this brightly colored can (bright colors and a lot of white are graphic designese for “healthy,” y’know) do not represent a bean pocked sludge like so many others do. More than half of the chili’s contents are recognizable as actual foodstuffs. Beans, corn, peppers, tomatoes and carrots can be seen swimming in a delightfully red sauce. These elements can also be tasted and distinguished when shoveling smeared corn chips into your mouth as well. With a satisfying flavor and consistency, this chili outperforms most other canned chilis I’ve tried.
As for the proportional litmus test, there was no vomiting the next morning. If we had been adhering to Super Bowl Sunday bylaws, I believe we would have been issued a penalty or yardage loss or something, but we weren’t out for glory, just a pleasant night in front of the dusty television set.
Don’t get me wrong, this stuff is still just canned chili, but if you’re going the convenience route, make a grab for Eating Right’s Chili. It’s probably the least volatile substance in the Chili aisle.
