Review: I was going to start this review by insulting the bulk of readers from Chicago by extreme derision of your popularly held belief that Goose Island Brewing Company makes the best beer in the country. I was going to tell you that, with the exception of a few of their specialty brews, GI tastes like the water out of the Chicago river. I was then going to tell you that finally, FINALLY, I have found a Chicago beer that tastes great, is affordable and, most importantly, might stand a chance of changing people’s minds about their taste bud deficient loyalty to Chicago’s Goose Island Brewing Company.

I was going to do all of that.

But… I can’t.

Do you know why?

Oh god this pains my drunken little head to say it.

Stockyard Oatmeal Stout is, in fact, brewed by Goose Island Brewing Company!

(sigh)

They tricked me. They constructed a label that looks down home and new, wiped that stupid goose logo from any surface and only included their name in the fine print. Not only that, but they made the flavor of this beer complex and chocolaty with just the right amount of carbonation. They made it pour dark and deep with a slight tint of blood red and a brown frothy head. Both biting and smooth in turn, the roasted barley and chocolate flavors are satisfying and worthy of sipping instead of shotgunning like I know all you Goose Island fans are used to. My only complaint is that this beer isn’t creamy enough to stand up to bigger and better stouts, but for less than a buck a bottle, that is a minor minor complaint.

You’ve won this battle, Goose Island. I tip my glass to you… and it’s filled with some of your beer.

It tastes pretty good but how much goodness do you get in each bottle? The front says “355 ml” and the back says “340 ml”
