Review: This is how much of a nerd I am. While everyone else in the Midwest is dying for summer to arrive so that they can attend outdoor sporting events, have picnics, see members of the opposite sex dress in ridiculous (but revealing) clothes, I am eagerly awaiting summer for one primary reason… Farmers Markets!

Oh the days when I can have fresh picked produce and herbs on a weekly basis can not come soon enough. Case and point, this O Organics fresh basil. While it is fragrant and fresh tasting, there is still a minor bit of disappointment. In a pinch, yes… it works. I’d even go so far as to say that this is a far better than average herbal product.

Still… I spend quite a bit of time at the grocery store flipping through the plastic clamshell cases of these basil leaves, looking for the one with the least amount of brown on the leaves. When I do finally find one with the minimum of brown marking, I am content… until I get home and start chopping. It is only then that I recognize the slight (almost nonexistent) waxy feel of these herbs.

I do not mean to dissuade you. This is a good product, for the most part. Fresh, however, waits for me each Sunday in a park by Lake Michigan. Fresh doesn’t come packaged by robot in a plastic clamshell case. Fresh smiles back and has no middle man between producer and consumer.

Farmers markets are almost here. Until then, my friends, let us pretend that fresh waits for us behind hinged plastic.
