Review: Anyone with pasta in their pantry or fresh cooking repertoire should have capers on hand at all times. Even the worst quality capers available from any American supermarket will make most home pasta dishes pop with flavor.
Whole Foods’ house brand of capers are of the non pareil (read: dainty, small and salty) kind in a simple brine. There’s nothing fancy here, and I happen to think that salt-packed capers tend to have a more enhanced flavor, but the floral piquancy that capers are known for is still front and center. My only major complaint is the bottle that these capers come in. Without a narrow spoon, most of the brine poured out of the bottle on my first use.
The capers still gave my simple pasta dish a coated flavor that clashed and carried the flavor well. I now just feel the need to use the remainder of the bottle within the next week or so.
