Review: I don’t usually buy many snack foods, but since discovering the massive Hong Kong Market that sits a mere half mile from my apartment, I’ve been a bit like a kid in a candy store. I tend to be more forgiving when it comes to foreign or otherwise unfamiliar snacks, though I probably shouldn’t be.

The bag you see above contains a plastic tray filled with 16-20 smaller snack-sized servings individually packaged in extra foil. Strike one. Though the individual packages of 3-8 crackers (a snack gamble!) hinders the overeating side effects of a snack attack, the extra waste produced is fairly disappointing.

When you do finally get through all of the packaging, the cracker itself resembles a flat square baked potato chip. Instead of the oily overtones and salty flavors I am used to from potato based snacks, these crackers have milder and sweeter tones to them that associates well with the genuine flavor of real potato. Unfortunately, there is an aftertaste that lingers long after the crackers are gone due to the inclusion of a bit too much MSG. This aftertaste isn’t enough to turn the snacker away, though. Rather, it causes you to reach for another snack pack until there is nothing left but crumbs and a small mountain of foil paper surrounding you.

An interesting, and mildly enjoyable snack, House of Steamed Potato’s Potato Crackers are a welcome experiment, yet have too much working against them to become a fridge-top staple.
