Price: $14.00 + tax

Review: My girlfriend and I went out for dinner at one of our favorite Chicago restaurants. Lula is great for it’s friendly knowledgeable staff, fresh and local ingredients and the fact that you can find a fancy dish to splurge on or an affordable standby that will not only keep your wallet fat, but also taste pretty damn good. My girlfriend ordered the former. I ordered the latter. Mine was better.

A fairly common Italian peasant dish, Lula’s pasta fagioli is made with rigatoni, house made sausage, tomato chunks, kale and cannellini beans. Topped with pecorino Sardo cheese, the price for this dish is a bit more than peasant wages… especially when you consider the modest size (hey Lula, don’t serve the small dish on a hugantic plate! it makes it look even smaller!). Despite the disparity of history and modern application, the fresh ingredients and inclusion of tomato chunks (many times pasta fagioli has the tomatoes removed, making it more of a soup or stew) made this dish well worth it. Lula’s sausage is slightly spicy and the kale adds a texture and taste that isn’t normally found in the Italian culinary canon.

But trust me… Don’t get the salmon!

$14 for Pasta e Fagioli? Come on now. I think you are going to find better and cheaper in Chicago, like you did with the Reuben from Eppy’s.
