From the Fight For Your Right… to Whine department:
Most of you probably read blogs written by people who actually post on Labor Day weekend, so you’ve, no doubt, seen the story about the guy who was arrested at a Circuit City in Brooklyn, Ohio for “Obstructing Official Business.”
It all started when Michael Righi refused to show his receipt to the Circuit City employee stationed near the exit after he had finished purchasing a few items. From there, the situation escalated, the police got involved and Michael was finally arrested. You can read Michael’s story over at his blog.
I, personally think the entire situation is ridiculous from front to back. Mr. Righi should not have been arrested for what transpired, but that isn’t the point. The point is the entire situation should not have transpired.
I also hate the receipt checks I am asked to participate in at electronics stores, yet if I found them insulting enough to refuse, you know what I’d do? I WOULDN’T SHOP AT A DAMN STORE WHO ASKED ME TO SHOW MY RECEIPT!
I’m all for standing up for rights as a consumer, but unless this was Mr. Righi’s first visit to a Circuit City, he knew that there was a receipt check coming and he knew what he was doing when he refused to show his. If you ask me, this kind of behavior is childish and attention-seeking. Regardless of anyone’s opinion on Circuit City’s policies, Mr. Righi made the decision to shop at Circuit City and made the decision to resist participation in one of the company’s policies. He even writes in his blog that he baited the manager of the store by “playing dumb.”
Consumer electronics are not a necessity of life. Again, do you know what I do when I don’t like the way an establishment chooses to treat its customers? I don’t shop there.
Lead paint in toys killing children? Child labor used to manufacture our consumer goods? E-Coli outbreak in some produce? These are all important stories and decent issues to draw attention to.
Playing a game of legal I’m-not-touching-you at a store that you don’t have to shop at in the first place is just a waste of time.
